Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Their longtime friend Bernie Marcus donated $25 million to help financially launch the organization. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing the awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. They are proud of what they have been able to accomplish and look forward to continued success in the years ahead. Walk Now for Autism Speaks, the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program, is Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event, taking place in communities across the United States, as well as in Canada. Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum and local businesses and companies that employ those on the spectrum, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder.
The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, they distributed 48 million pounds of food, enough to provide healthy meals to as many as 545,000 people. They are committed to increasing their food distribution in 2014 to provide at least ONE MEAL A DAY to every person in need in eastern Massachusetts. GBFB acquires food through food industry product donations, food drives and financial contributions that enable them to purchase additional high nutrient quality food. They also benefit from the generosity of over 25,000 volunteers annually who help to sort and distribute donated food products. GBFB works to acquire, store, organize and distribute food through local food pantries, community meal programs, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers embedded in communities throughout the nine counties of eastern Massachusetts. GBFB’s food assistance locator provides an easy way for people in need to find help nearby. GBFB also distributes food directly to those in need through dedicated programs that serve particularly vulnerable groups, such as seniors and children. Since 2009, GBFB has operated out of a state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, the Yawkey Distribution Center, located in the Newmarket section of Boston. The Greater Boston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization.
Since 1991, the Kids Clothes Club has been providing new, warm winter coats to children in need. In their first year, they helped thirty children stay warm through the cold New England winter. Today, thanks to the generosity of donors, they distribute thousands of coats each year. The Kids Clothes Club works through schools, day care centers, shelters, and community agencies to identify children in need and deliver new winter coats that are stylish, warm, and guaranteed to bring a smile to a child's face. As additional schools and community agencies hear about us, the requests for help keep growing. Last season they gave out over 7,000 new warm and stylish coats. Their coffers are nearly empty and due to a lack of funding and they have cut their order to only 3,000 coats. Food Bank For New York City has been the city’s major hunger-relief organization for over 30 years. Nearly one in five New Yorkers relies on Food Bank for food and other resources. Food Bank takes a strategic, multifaceted approach that provides meals and builds capacity in the neediest communities, while raising awareness and engagement among all New Yorkers. Through its network of more than 1,000 charities and schools citywide, Food Bank provides food for more than 63 million free meals for New Yorkers in need.
