Food Quality and Safety
The FDA has cleared romaine sales for product grown in non-affected regions. The guidelines are as follows: The romaine must be harvested on or after November 23rd from areas outside of Central and Northern California. Permitted areas include the Imperial Valley and other desert growing regions of CA, Yuma, AZ and Florida.
So that you may easily determine the source of your greens, Olivia’s Organics will be including the growing region and harvest date on our packaging.
Currently, the Olivia’s items at your grocery store do not contain romaine, but you will soon see Olivia’s Organics Baby Romaine back on the shelves. Baby Romaine will also be back our blends: Spring Mix, Spring Mix w/Herbs, 50/50, and Sweet Baby Lettuce.
Here is an example of the information that you will now find on our packaging:
Thank you for checking in with us and thank you for supporting Olivia’s.
Our unwavering commitment to providing the freshest and highest quality organic produce goes hand-in-hand with our stringent food safety program. At Olivia's Organics, food safety is our first priority. Organic means our growers utilize earth-friendly farming methods. And while we are working hard to help better preserve our planet for the future, we never lose sight of the importance of providing organic produce that is safe, clean and fresh. We’re proud of our reputation as a brand with the highest quality standards for the organic food we produce.
When you purchase Olivia’s Organics products, you’re buying produce grown by select, qualified, American farmers. Our leafy greens have been pre-screened and tested long before they enter our facility.
We only buy from the best. All of our growers are organic and GAP certified, and must complete a rigorous qualification program. Strict agricultural guidelines ensure that our product is carefully cultivated and is both safe and wholesome.
At the farm, all of our leafy greens are pre-screened for microbiological hazards. Pathogen testing is conducted by certified third party laboratories. We will only receive greens with a negative micro result to prevent any contaminated product from entering our system.
Transporters carrying product from the farm to our facility also follow strict guidelines. A Transportation Affidavit insures that shippers adhere to refrigeration, cleanliness, safety, and security protocols. All of our carriers are equipped with temperature recording devices, continually monitoring and recording the environment around their precious cargo. Upon receipt, our Quality Assurance technicians thoroughly inspect every shipment for quality, condition, temperature and potential food safety hazards. Product that does not meet our strict standards is either diverted to animal feed or destroyed.
Our products are closely monitored from field to fork and everywhere in between. They are examined, inspected, and scrutinized during transport and upon receipt. We wash them, dry them and inspect them again – all before they are packaged and deemed ready to hit the stores.
Our wash and packaging facility is state-of-the-art. It’s designed to incorporate the latest technologies (e.g. optical sorters and enhanced wash systems) with the highest standards for food safety in the produce industry. We employ systems studied by NASA, such as environmental sampling and bioluminescent testing.
Our products are packaged fresh daily to fill orders for our customers. All storage areas are secure and maintain an intact cold chain. Every package is labeled and tracked throughout the storage and shipping processes. Packaged leafy greens are re-tested by a certified third party laboratory. The product can’t be shipped to your local market until our Quality Assurance technicians receive and enter negative test results.
